Project 1: Plankton in Lough Foyle
Background:
Seasonal patterns in temperate plankton are fairly well understood; however, there is a need to have site-specific information to inform managers of likely spatfall periods of commercial species such as Ostrea edulis. It is also invaluable to pick up periods of bloom of phytoplankton, which drive productivity, at a local scale and to improve understanding of plantonic grazers such as copepods.
General objective:
To quantify seasonal nutrient, climatic and plankton cycles in Lough Foyle.
Essential requirements: 2.1 degree in a relevant biological discipline; a clean driving licence and access to a car.
Desirable skills/experience: Field sampling on boats and microscopic identification of plankton.
Project 2: Assessment of production grow out strategies for commercial development of European Perch (Perca fluviatilis)
Background:
European Perch (Perca fluviatilis) has become an important candidate species for the future diversification of the European aquaculture industry. Buoyed by strong market demand the interest in cultivating European perch has resulted in the establishment of a number of farms in recent years. Although most commercial development and experience to date across Europe has been in recirculating aquaculture Systems (RAS) existing trout farms with flow through systems may be suitable for the culture of perch. Commercial grow out strategies have not yet been developed in Ireland and there is interest from the existing trout sector in farming European perch.
Post Doctoral position
The Department of Biological Sciences at Old Dominion University, a Doctoral Research-Extensive state university, has a Post-Doc position available which includes participation in a project to assess a large number of marine species for the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species through a collaborative initiative with the IUCN Species Program. The position involves background research, organizing and conducting international workshops and meetings, supervising research assistants, writing proposals, reports and scientific papers, and assisting teaching courses in Ichthyology and Marine Conservation Biology.
Applicants must have a PhD in Biology, Zoology, Oceanography or a related field with a dissertation topic in marine conservation biology or marine ecology. A high level of proficiency in scientific writing in English is required and a strong peer-reviewed publication record with a strong commitment to continued publication in peer-reviewed journals is highly desirable. Knowledge of modeling and spatial analyses in ecological settings, Geographical Information System experience, and proficiency in Spanish or French are desirable.

Polyploidy and immunity in Neotropical catfishes
Project Description
Ancient whole genome duplications (WGDs) and the additional genetic resources resulting from them have played major roles in the evolution many eukaryotes. In vertebrates, there is strong evidence that two rounds of ancient WGD were followed by a third additional WGD in the teleost fishes – the fish specific genome duplication (FSGD). The role that WGD plays in the evolutionary success of recipient taxa and lineages has been hotly debated for many decades. However, while progress has been made in understanding the origins and mechanisms of the formation of polyploids in many groups, less attention has been devoted to the advantages and/or disadvantages of being a polyploid.

Project Description
The annual rate of invasions by animals and plants continues to rise, as do their economic, ecological and societal costs (estimated cost to the UK economy is £1.7 billion per annum). Predicting correctly which invasive species will be successful and how damaging they will be is a critical research priority, and this remains a challenge. This has hampered the inclusion of the potential overall impacts of specific invasives in risk assessment protocols and hence any limited available finances cannot be directed to the most likely damaging invaders.
