Volunteer Eco Divers from Scotland and Ireland helped with positioning and setting up the first Silmar research transect in 2009. Two trainee Divemasters volunteered to map the research area as a part of their course. Eco Dive volunteers from the UK, Ireland, the USA, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Australia have helped to collect data during 2009 to 2011.

Kenna Eco Diving is a small, non-profit, research oriented organisation working with internationaEcoDive Volunteer surveying Posidonia speciesl marine scientists and volunteer divers to study and protect marine ecosystems and threatened species in the Catalan region of the Mediterranean Sea.

Our aim is to increase understanding of the current pressures upon habitats along the Catalan coast, with particular emphasis on the fragile Posidonia oceanica seagrass ecosystem, and to contribute towards marine biodiversity conservation by promoting sustainable coastal development and marine management.

Posidonia pipe fishKenna Eco Diving is a voluntary coordinators for the SILMAR Project, run by the Catalan Marine NGO Fundaciomar, which maps and monitors coastal habitats around the Iberian peninsular and will report back to the EU to inform future planning in respect of The Water Quality Directive, Fisheries legislation, and the siting of Marine Protected Areas

Kenna Eco Diving has been carrying out voluntary marine conservation activities on the Costa Brava since 1999, freely sharing data and underwater photographs with organisations like MarBEF, Project Aware, Fishbase and Earthdive. Since 2009, as voluntary coordinators the SILMAR Project, we have been researching a transect at Cala Montgo, L’Escala, which passes through a Posidonia meadow as well as rocky habitats. Since 2010 we have a second research site that passes through a cave full of precious red coral and along a beautiful wall.

All our volunteer activities are carried out through the English language.

During Eco Dives we pick up any underwater litter that we find and also carry out dedicated  Project Aware Underwater Cleanups each week throughout the research season, as well as a Summer Beach Cleanup with L’Escala school kids.
